Voyager: Jupiter's "Black Box"
Editorial design
2018
London
This project showcases one of the four photography collections from the Voyager mission, visually depicting the vast number of images the spacecraft captured during its approach to Jupiter. It imparts a sense of 'time' and 'aloneness' through the use of flip books, accompanied by a NASA soundtrack playlist specifically curated for the Voyager mission. This analogy invites the reader to experience the spacecraft's journey.
The Jupiter collection alone comprises over 20,000 raw images taken during its planetary mission. Utilising data merge and Excel functions, a unique set of 12 books is produced, mirroring the aesthetics of a 'black box' and a physical archive.
The final product includes a set of 12 books, encased in a box and provided with a user manual. All components are in black and white to symbolise the 'emptiness' of space and the 'aloneness' of being the only entity within it. A mono typeface, reminiscent of old computing coding fonts, is chosen for this project. The book covers feature planetary information and the date of approach by the two Voyagers, printed on Canford Card Jet Black 300gsm in white ink. The inner pages are printed on Colorplan Pristine White 100gsm.
Over a span of twelve years, the twin Voyager spacecraft unveiled nearly half of the solar system. From their launch in 1977 to their final glimpse of Neptune at the solar system's outer reaches in 1989, they explored four planets - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune - along with dozens of moons, rings, and magnetic fields of these planetary systems.
This project was showcased at the Salon XVIII exhibition at the London College of Communication in June 2018.
